What happens at The Fresh Breath Clinic?

A full medical history is taken to eliminate a non-oral source of the problem (in my experience less than 1% of cases are due to an underlying medical history, eg. oral cancer, Sjogrens syndrome, Diabetes and kidney, liver or lung disease).

A thorough oral examination is conducted to check for stagnation areas, faulty restorations (fillings, crowns), cavities, impacted wisdom teeth, tooth and gum abscesses, tonsils, gum disease and tongue coating, all of which may contribute to, or be the direct cause of halitosis.

Halimeter readings are taken. A Halimeter is a special machine which analyses the breath for volatile sulphur compounds. It quantifies the problem with a read out in parts per billion. Over 150 is generally regarded as being offensive to others within close talking proximity.

An organoleptic test may be done (whereby I smell your breath!)

A treatment plan is formulated, this might involve (on very rare occasions) referral to a specialist if an underlying medical condition is present. It may involve an improvement in the standard of home care (oral hygiene) to an impeccable level and the resolution of any underlying dental issues as outlined above.

A home treatment regime will be prescribed.
